In 1922 the town of Tarzana was founded, however the official name "Tarzana" did not formally occur until 1927 when the 300 residents of the area chose the name through a contest. Known as the "Heart of Ventura Boulevard" in the 1930s, Tarzana was then a group of small stores on Ventura Boulevard including a grocery store, a drug store, a few small shops surrounded by acres of farmland.
